Ben to lead the Hammers
Southend star Ben Morley will captain The Thurrock Hammers select side when they take on The Kent TouchTec Kings at Central Park Stadium this coming Bank Holiday Monday (Gates 2.30pm First race 4pm)
The Eastbourne and Isle of Wight racer, who competed for the Hammers in all three levels of British Speedway, and also captained the side during the National League season in 2017, was the unanimous choice of the club’s three directors.
Morley commented “It’s great to be able to ride for the Hammers again, and I’m chuffed to be leading the side. Hopefully this meeting will help to keep the Hammers name out there.”
“The Kings have a strong looking team, but I’ve done a lot of laps around Central Park as have most of the other Hammers boys, especially Nathan (Stoneman), Alfie (Bowtell) and Danno (Verge) so hopefully along with Nick, Sheldon & William we’ll be able to give a good account of ourselves.”
Kent will track teen sensation Drew Kemp, along with another rising star Dan Gilkes, who first rode for the Hammers in 2018, helping the Essex based team win the Tunnel trophy at Sittingbourne.
Additional Hammers connections in the Kings seven include Alex Spooner who rode for the club during their National League campaign, and former Hammer Rob Ledwith who rode at the Raceway in various stints between 1989 and 1995. Anders Rowe, Nathan Ablitt and Jordan Jenkins complete the team.
Ahead of Monday’s action Thurrock Hammers Director Mark Sexton commented:
The Tunnel Trophy fixture keeps the Hammers name alive and we’re very grateful to Len Silver and the rest of his Kings’ backroom staff for providing us with this opportunity.
We’re very confident that our seven riders will wear the crossed hammers logo with pride and we’re quietly confident of pulling off a win.
Monday afternoon’s meeting represents an early milestone on the road to returning the club to its rightful home and we look forward to seeing Central Park packed with Hammers fans cheering the boys on.”
